Week 5. A bad week

This hasn't been a good week. A good friend of ours, Stewart, committed suicide in Malawi - this is our third close friend to do so within the last 5 years. I put it down to loss of identity with us all having to move on to other countries in our middle years. Feelngs of guilt for being so far away and the desperate watching of my own dear fellow as he struggles to find meaning in his Australian life - have overriden my ability to concentrate on the mundane (like studying). Why worry about technology when our ex-employees are struggling for survival in Zimbabwe. Life goes on ----

Have looked a little closer at the "Followers" link on these blogs. For example, Al has become a follower of mine. If I click on his follower icon, I can see his blog profile and access it from my blog. I can also see who else he is linked to and access those blogs. Good idea for a small classroom network. However, I want access to the blogs that I am now following from here. Came across this "With the Blogger Reading List, you can read all of the latest posts from your favorite blogs right on your Blogger Dashboard! Your Blogger Reading List, conveniently located under your list of blogs on your dashboard, enables you to subscribe to any blog with a feed. It will update instantly each time a new post is published on any blog in your Reading List. " Just can't find the Reading List! OK. Found. Select Customize on the top RHS and the dashboard link appears. This allows viewing of one's profile etc, and latest posting to subscribed blogs. Before finding this, I became a follower of myself! And then I could see all my links to other blogs with one obvious lick. I managed to remove myself as a follower (seemed a little self-centred!), but hav decided to reinstate this as it seemed an easier viewing option. My own little RSS feeder right here on my blog.
All for today.

  1. Hi Joan, What a sad week for you. At my husband's work this last week, 2 relatives of his workmates committed or tried to commit suicide. I'm a little afraid with more tough times to come economically that this act will be become more prevelant. So sad for those that they leave behind.

To follow all my blogs I like to read I use google reader. It tells me when there is a new post and I can put the blogs into categories too. I love it. So much easier than clicking on all those links.

    Cheers Kathryn

  2. Hi Kathryn,

Thanks for that. Yes, Australia has its problems. Another friend of ours was out with a Churh group focused on helping Australian farmers as the suicide rate is so large amongst this group. Sometimes the whole world seems against one as a farmer.

Just a question about google reader. I see that at the bottom of the page where one views all the blogs one is following (here in my blog). So, do you log into your blog first or is this sent to your e-mail or what?
    Cheers

  3. Hi Joan

I am sorry to hear your news. Dealing with loss of identity and guilt through displacement from your country is terrible. I can't begin to imagine what it feel like.

With regards to Google reader, and Kathryn can correct me if I am wrong, as long as you have a Google account ie Blogger, Web pictures etc then it will automatically collate the blogs you are watching. You need to sign into your google account first before you can access it though. I read all the update blogs from my web browser. I am not to sure if there is a way to send them to your inbox but if I find out I will let you know.

I hope this answered the question.

    Cheers

p.s shame about the online debate!

  4. Hi Joan
Sorry to hear about your friend - my thoughts and prayers are with you.

If it is ok - I am going to attempt to be a follower of you! I sometimes feel like I could be put in the category of 'technophobe' and just don't try some things as it looks too tricky... We will see if I have a success!

All the best with this next assignment.

  5. Hi Joan,
Am so sorry to hear about your friend, Stewart!
I can relate to your comment about concentrating on the 'mundane' when others you care about are struggling with life. Last year I lost a dear friend in Holland who emailed me 3 days before she died (she had cancer). She told me to enjoy life and to make sure I do the things I always wanted to do, because you never know what's around the corner. As you said, life goes on, but I now really try to be conscious about what is important and what I should concentrate on even though life is not always in our control! My thoughts are with you.

You asked me about how to follow my blog and to be honest I was not even aware of this feature, but worked out how to set it up. Although I have quite a bit of stuff floating in my head about all I read, I haven't actually got around to posting any of it to my blog. So, at the moment there is not much to follow, but I am telling myself to make more of an effort.

    Take care. Cheers
    Sondra
